Y, 7 Oct 2002 A Please try the General Hospital in Johor Bahru. There is usually a Breast Clinic in the Surgical Department of each general hospital. Otherwise you could try to contact the Breast Cancer Support Group, 23, Jalan Bersatu, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Tel : 07-3337012 for more information on where you can seek consultation specifically for breast related conditions. Radiology Malaysia is trying to compile a directory of Breast Clinics in Malaysia. Please check this website regularly for updates! Editor | | Talkback Q&A - In an abortion, will the milk “stuck” in the breast lead to cancer? | | Q If a person had an abortion, what will happen with the milk in the breast (produced in that 1-2 months). Will it stay there? Is there any need take any medicine? Will the milk cause breast cancer? Please comment. Calvin 8 Oct 2002 A If the abortion is induced in the first or second trimester, the milk production will be very minimal and should not cause any problem. The breast will cease to produce the milk in short period of time since the breast has not developed fully unlike in those who reach term. However there are some drugs that can be used to help to stop the milk production. The person should consult the doctor for this. The milk does not cause cancer in fact it has the opposite effect. It is well-known that breast feeding (in other words the breast is producing milk for longer period especially if it is more than six months) has PROTECTIVE effect i.e reduces the risk of getting breast cancer. Dr Nor Aina Emran Consultant Surgeon Breast and Endocrine Clinic Hospital Putrajaya | | Talkback Q&A - Prolactin in Breast Cancer | | Q I read an article from LE Magazine June 1999 (website) that there was a study done indicating that Elevated Prolactin is linked to Breast Cancer. The reason I write is to enquire if you know where and whom I can seek answers if this study as reported by a Dr.Susan E.Hankinson of Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, is known and accepted. Helen W. 11th June 2002 A The research on prolactin and breast cancer is on going. Interest in this probably arose from the fact that prolactin (the hormone) is involved in normal breast development in rodents and humans. It clearly plays a role in rodent “mammary” cancer but has not been accepted as having any role in human breast cancer thus far. You may wish to look up the following reference: Spontaneous Apoptosis of circulating T-lymphocytes and its correlation to their prolactin receptor expression and prolactin plasma levels in patients with breast cancer. Editor | | Talkback Q&A - Adakah memakai baju dalam mempengaruhi risiko kanser payudara? | Q Saya seorang remaja perempuan berusia 19 ingin bertanya soalan:-adakah penggunaan baju dalam wanita juga turut mempengaruhi didalam risiko terjadinya kanser ini? Baju dalam yang bagaimanakah yang sesuai digunakan? Terima kasih. Pengarang | | Talkback Q&A - Breast Related Matters | Q I am 20 years old and I would like to know what is the best way to scan for breast cancer for those who are under 40 years old? From the information that you provided, mammogram is suitable for those aged 40 and above. AL, 4th October 2001 Q I read regarding the subsidised mammogram scanning in The Star newspaper. I wanted to register, as I've never had a mammogram before. However, it is unfortunate that the subsidised program is only applicable to women aged 35 and above.
I'm turning 26 this Nov and I would like to have to check up to see if my breasts are OK. After all, I do feel "lumps" but I'm not sure if they are benign or not or whether they are merely what people call as lymph nodes.
CY, 14th October 2001 Q Is there any place where I can go to have a breast check-up, a place that is endorsed by the center, perhaps? I don't really go to the usual clinics or health center because some doctors gives easy prognosis. I feel much better if I go and see a specialist. I was thinking about going to a private hospital but it's kind of expensive. I'm still a student so I'm tight on budget. ZuMN 24th October 2001 Answers to the above: If you are very young and do not feel anything is wrong with your breast physically, it is not a must to see a healthcare provider for a breast examination. The healthcare provider could be your college nurse, government clinic or family doctor. However, if you feel that there may be something wrong in your breast, it is best that you see a doctor immediately for confirmation. He/she will then, send you for further tests if necessary. Normally at 20 and 26 years, we do not recommend a mammogram, unless your doctor feels you have something suspicious. I hope you have taken time to read through the articles in the Breast Health Info Centre as they will answer many of your questions and worries. Therefore, before you consider a mammogram, you need to see your family doctor, or a breast specialist. If you look at the article on self breast examination, there are guidelines to what are normal lumps and bumps etc. If you still feel there may be something wrong with your own breasts, and I hope you perform regular self breast examination before you can really detect subtle changes in your breasts, you need to see a doctor. Normally a family doctor (GP) would be less expensive or you could try the Breast Clinic in a government hospital, where the charges are cheaper. A short list is also available in the articles on List of breast clinics, mammography centres. In response to the queries for “screening” for the younger women, an article on “Less than 35 years old and with breast symptoms” is now available in the Breast Health Info Centre. This article focuses on this issue although the answers are actually found in the various other articles found in this section of the website - Editor
Sekian. Terima kasih.
| Please click here for Topic Index |
