Marsita Johari Fights On!
By Dr Evelyn Ho

Marsita was interviewed when she came to support and be part of the audience at Astro Ria's ANITA talk show recording featuring breast cancer on 5 Aug 2003.

One would never have guessed all this diminutive lady has gone through by looking at her. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 (about 7 years ago), she went on to have cancer of the ovary resulting in another operation in 1998. Another 2 years later, she had part of her colon and her pancreas removed and in April 2003, she discovered her breast cancer had spread to her bones!

The discomfort and sometimes “bone pain” does not show. How does she handle all this? Her secret is having a very positive outlook on her condition. She also finds that expressing herself, telling her story and sometimes, just letting it all out very therapeutic. However, she is careful not to say too much to her family as she does not want them to treat her like “she might just die tomorrow”!!! She tells it straight as it is and she also counsels other friends never to treat their relative with cancer as if they have no more hope. Those with cancer should be treated as normally as possible.

Marsita has through the years become so attuned to her body she knows exactly when something is not right. She admits that sometimes, she talks to “herself” – actually to her cancer cells!

By being positive, she knows she has a fighting chance against the breast cancer that has spread to her bones. Marsita definitely stands out as a beacon of hope to many who are “new” to having cancer. There is always tomorrow where there is hope.

Impressive Marsita still works as a part time insurance agent and is 52 years old.

Mammography is not that awful!

We have on this page, some of the candid comments from women on their experience of the mammogram, many of them first timers!

Relates one first timer...

"I was surprised when I was told to take off my blouse and bra! I found the positioning of the breast rather difficult but not very uncomfortable. It was only for just a short time. "
