Can breast cancer be prevented? General Lifestyle Choices

When we talk about prevention in breast cancer, we aim to reduce mortality (death) and morbidity (unpleasant symptoms and suffering) and improve the quality of life.

As we do not know the specific cause of breast cancer, prevention in breast cancer is related to raising awareness of the disease, avoidance of risk factors where possible and adopting a healthy lifestyle are smart choices.

These day to day choices involve factors such as poor diet, insufficient exercise, alcohol use and smoking. A healthy lifestyle may also help prevent heart disease, diabetes and many other chronic diseases.

These include:

1.Decreasing your daily fat intake

2.Increasing fibre in your diet (fibre is found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits).

3.Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. (In addition to fibre, they contain antioxidants and micronutrients)

4.Limit alcohol. There is evidence to suggest that women may at slightly increased risk if they drink an average of 2 or more drinks per day.

5.Exercise. Staying active can help you prevent many health problems. Brisk walking on a regular basis on most days of the week would be ideal. Otherwise, some exercise is still better than no exercise at all.

6.Do not smoke. Although smoking does not cause breast cancer, it has an overall effect on your health that may predispose you to other diseases.
