Less than 35 years old: What can I do?

Let us summarise what we already know from the various articles in the Breast Health Info Centre and related to the topic above. What indeed can you do?

  • Breast cancer is less common the younger you are, especially so, if you are less than 30 years old
  • Many women are now getting very concerned because someone in your office, household, extended family, friends may have breast cancer
  • Ignorance is NOT BLISS
  • Excessive anxiety about your breasts is NOT healthy!
  • Prevention in breast cancer is related to reducing the number of those dying from the disease and/or suffering from the disease.
  • Early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer
  • Good habits of breast health are in your hands
  • You are NEVER too young to take charge of your own breast health
  • Self breast examination can be performed by everyone, regardless of age or sex and should be done every month once you have reached 18-20 years old. This should be done 2-3 days after the menses is over in women.
  • Screening mammography is more suitable for women 40 years and older, especially if they are in the high risk groups
  • There is no specific age limit for the diagnostic mammogram, not when your doctor suspects you may have breast cancer.

Know your own breasts….
Many of us may have never intentionally and systematically felt our own breasts, and we can be alarmed by what are actually “normal” findings for ourselves. Therefore, it helps to know your own breasts to avoid any false alarms and unnecessary worry or anxiety! The bottomline is, if you do not perform regular SBE, you will not be able to “know” your own breasts!

If you have not already done so, find out all about SBE by clicking here.

Consult your
doctor if you suspect if there is something wrong

Lumpy breasts are common and may be your natural breast texture. Most lumps
are harmless, or benign.
