SBE Workshop at the Lake Club, Kuala Lumpur, 8 June 2002

Dr Evelyn imparting tips on how to examine the breast models

A group of women from the Soroptimist International Club, Kuala Lumpur was given some first hand practical tips on Self Breast Examination – the Who, What, Where, Why and How aspects. There were many questions and the session was interactive. Hajjah Elahe Norman volunteered for the demonstration of how to position oneself for the “feeling the breast” procedure.

The session began at 4.30pm and finished at about 6pm. Teaching Breast Models were used to check on technique as well as to help gain some confidence on the detection of lumps. Mrs June Yeoh, the National President of the YWCA was there to update the ladies on the progress of the NCWO Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2002.

The ladies were not entirely new to self breast examination and we hope they will be more motivated to practise it on a more regular basis, i.e. once a month, after the menses is over and for those without menses, on the same day of every month. The rationale for more systematic SBE was well received as well. Questions ranged from those related to self breast examination, breast pain to mammography!

Positive feedback for this session was received and requests for such SBE sessions for other groups were made. We hope activities of this nature will help to motivate others to practise self breast examination and raise the awareness for breast cancer without invoking undue fear. Armed with knowledge, we can fight this cancer!

Since breast cancer afflicts women predominantly, what better day to launch the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2002, then, International Women's Day!
