 Revised 20/08/2003
| Sunway Medical Centre’s Breast Cancer Awareness Weekends 4 & 5, 18 & 19 May 2002 | In the month of May, two weekends were devoted to creating and raising breast cancer awareness in Sunway Medical Centre, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. With support from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, the College of Radiology and the National Council of Women’s Organisations – Sunway held a poster exhibition as well as had special rates for mammography and ultrasound of the breasts in those of the right age group or those who have breast problems. Counselling was available through the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, including instructions in the method of effective self-breast examination. The BCWA received positive feedback from the visitors to the Breast Cancer Awareness activities. | | The Breast Cancer Welfare Association were present with self breast (SBE) examination models available for personal instruction on SBE |
Two of the Centre's team of lady radiographers had attended a Trainer’s session for Self breast examination in April 2002 and were also ready for self breast examination instruction as well as examining the women prior to their examination. A personal computer was available for anyone interested in perusing the College of Radiology’s Breast Health Info Centre website as well as the Radiology Malaysia website. CDs were available for those without Internet connections at home. | | Visitors interested in breast health perusing the educational posters. |
The NCWO Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign leaflets and fridge magnets were very popular and were snapped up rapidly!
The total number of visitors for Sunway’s efforts were 71. A third of the visitors had their first baseline mammogram. 12 of 49 ladies who had mammograms needed an ultrasound examination as well. The majority of the visitors were between 40-55 years old.
We are most happy to report that there was at least one gentleman showing the way as “head of the house” by bringing their wife, sisters and sister- in-law to the exhibition. This is a very positive sign and we hope more and more men have realized the importance of being breast aware!
Radiology Malaysia congratulates Sunway Medical Centre for joining the Breast Cancer Awareness 2002 campaign. | | The Radiology Malaysia WebEditor and the large team of lady radiographers all ready for the breast cancer awareness weekends. | | | |
