It’s the extended lunch hour from 12 noon to 2pm in HELP University College and the PR department in collaboration with the DR101 and EN102 classes were busy preparing for the launch of the breast cancer awareness campaign.
Dr Vanaja Nethi, Head of Department, Ms Anjali Ashwin, lecturer, Dr Evelyn Ho from the College of Radiology, Mrs June Yeoh from the National Council of Women’s Organisations and the team from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association attended the launch. After short speeches from Dr Vanaja, Ms Anjali and Dr Evelyn Ho, the students heard testimonies from breast cancer survivors - Mrs June Yeoh and Tammy Tam. This was the first time an awareness programme on breast cancer and breast health was being organised with assistance from the Mass-Communications department. Ms Anjali gave credit to her students in the drama programme, as they had taken enthusiastically to the idea of incorporating the breast cancer theme into their drama productions. In fact, they had been remarkably creative!
Part of the launch programme were a Banner Signing ceremony, songs presented by the talented students and the first drama production. In addition, some fund raising activities included a food sale in collaboration with Star Bucks Coffee. Three Breast Cancer Welfare Association members, Tammy Tam, Linda Lim and Lily Lee were on hand to man a booth and answer questions as well as teach self breast examination to any interested parties.

The drama productions incorporating a theme on breast cancer was the brainwave of the College of Radiology’s Breast Health/Cancer Awareness Programme Coordinator, Dr Evelyn Ho. It would not have materialised for some key people, Royce Cheah who introduced Dr Ho to Ms Anjali, the lecturer in the American Degree Programme; and of course Dr Vanaja who supported the idea and encouraged the lecturers and students in this project.
In addition to drama productions ending on 19 November 2004, poetry recitation also featured on 18 November 2004.
The winning team for the drama production and the winner for the poetry recitation received their prizes at the College of Radiology’s Prize Presentation on 25 November 2004. The College of Radiology records their appreciation and thanks to HELP University College’s American Degree Programme Department, Mrs June Yeoh of the National Council of Women’s Organisations, the Breast Cancer Welfare Association team and Mr Francis Lee (photography for Radiology Malaysia, www.radiologymalaysia.org).
