| Breast Health Awareness Charity Jogathon 2007, Sandakan, Sabah – 1 Dec 2007 Contributed by Mary Alex-Tek Mansiw on behalf of the Sandakan Breast Health Awareness Committee The Sandakan Breast Health Awareness Committee organised a fund-raising activity in the form of a jogathon cum fellowship to raise funds for its ongoing outreach activities. Part of the funds raised was targeted for distribution to the breast cancer patients in Sandakan.
The jogathon was officiated by the Sekong State Assemblyman, Datuk Mejar Samsudin bin Yahya.
The jogathon attracted a participation of about 100 participants including members of the organising committee. It was very much a family event with the participants enjoying the jog, fellowship and dance. |

| Public Forum on Breast Health 2007, Keningau, Sabah – 19 Aug 2007 Contributed by Mary Alex-Tek Mansiw on behalf of the Sandakan Breast Health Awareness Committee A public forum was held in Keningau, the biggest rural township of Sabah in a hotel named Hotel Juta. The hotel management sponsored the venue while the other expenditure was covered by IJM Plantations Berhad. The forum was also another collaboration with PEWASA-Keningau.
A total of over 200 participants turned up for the forum. The State of Sabah President of PEWASA, Datuk Hjh Zahra Ismail officiated the event.
On the following day, the Dr Azlinah Firzah Abdul Aziz and Mary Alex made a courtesy visit to the Director of Keningau General Hospital. |

| Public Forum on Breast Health 2007, Apin-Apin, Sabah – 18 Aug 2007 Contributed by Mary Alex-Tek Mansiw on behalf of the Sandakan Breast Health Awareness Committee A public health forum was held in the rural town of Apin-Apin on 18 August 2007 in collaboration with Pertubuhan Wanita Sabah- Keningau (PEWASA) (Sabah Women's Organisation) and Loongsyn Sdn Bhd of IJM Plantations Berhad.
IJM Plantations Berhad has been very supportive of breast cancer awareness projects throughout Sabah, starting with Sandakan in 2006 and continuing into 2007 in Apin-Apin and Keningau. In addition to rendering ground support and assistance in implementation, IJM Plantations Berhad also provided sponsorship for the forum as part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project to create awareness of breast health in Sabah.
The objective of the forum was to raise awareness amongst the rural participants on breast health and to promote breast self examination (BSE).
The two speakers involved were Dr Azlina Firzah Abdul Aziz and Mary Alex. The talks and demonstrations were conducted in Bahasa Malaysia. Nurses from Hospital Keningau were available for translation into Bahasa Kadazan-Dusun.
In Apin-Apin, the session was held in the town community hall packed with over 150 participants. The forum also attracted the ‘participation’ of several ‘guest’ goats and dogs wandering into the hall! The forum was officiated by the Bingkor State Assemblyman, Mr Justin Guka. |

NCR 2003 Report: Breast Cancer is still the top cancer amongst women 
Latest statistics from the National Cancer Registry (NCR) show that lung cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in the country, whilst breast cancer is the top cancer in women. Lung cancer accounts for 13.8 per cent of cancer cases among men. For women, breast cancer accounts for 31 per cent of cases. |  |
