College of Radiology WALKS for WORLD PINK, Kuala Lumpur 3 Oct 2009
By Dr Evelyn Ho

It was great weather for College of Radiology members, supporters and friends to join the Estée Lauder Companies’ initiative to raise breast cancer awareness and funds, i.e. Walk for World Pink at Menara Kuala Lumpur. The walk flagged off at 6.30pm, but participants and supporters were there earlier with a host of activities to keep everyone’s spirits high despite the humidity!

There were at least 1,200 registered for the 3.8km walk, but many more came with their children to support the event, and walked together in solidarity for the common cause. Estée Lauder Companies kicked off their Pink October activities with a bang all right, as the starter gun was fired by Mr Mohd Affandi Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer (Muzium Telekom) of KL Tower management. All the participants were raring to go, of all ages, size and colour! Hitz FM trucks led the way and were there early to add to the hype.

Activities available at the registration period included:

  • Booths selling food & beverages

  • Booth for donation : RM 50 to receive a pink T-shirt and an enamel pink ribbon

  • a Fresher U in 2 booth by Lab Series Skincare for Men

  • Face painting

  • HITZ/ MIX FM Road Runner

  • Cheerleading demonstration

  • Breast Cancer Welfare Association  booth (demonstration of the correct way to do self breast check)

  • Formation of a giant human pink ribbon

Those who registered for the walk for RM30, got a pink round neck T shirt, with a goodie bag that they collected at the end of the walk. There was also a lucky draw for hampers right at the end, after the illumination of Menara KL. Those who patiently waited to see the landmark illumination event were rewarded by the spectacular lighting of Menara KL and four base jumpers in action.

Estée Lauder Companies in Malaysia support the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation and free or subsidised mammograms through the National Cancer Society of Malaysia  and College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia
