Menara Kuala Lumpur Lights Up In Pink –3 Oct 2009 By Dr Evelyn Ho
“World Pink, World Without Breast Cancer” – these were the words lighting up the Menara Kuala Lumpur as part of the Estée Lauder Companies’ (ELC)Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative at just after 8pm on a balmy Saturday night.
Mr Loo Kai Nan, Managing Director of ELC Malaysia started off the event with a short and succinct speech on ELC’s breast cancer awareness campaign. Xandria Ooi was the emcee for the event. She was no stranger to the illumination events as she was also emcee in the ELC inaugural illumination in Malaysia, that of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in 2007 and in 2008, Menara KL
However, the atmosphere at the 2009 Illumination was fantastic with hundreds of Walk for World Pink participants still present to witness this annual historical event. They cheered with prompting from Xandria. Perhaps, holding the lucky draw for Walk for World participants until after the Illumination was a strong motivating factor! They were not disappointed as the illumination was spectacular and four base jumpers thrilled the crowd and invited guests (not to mention the hampers for the lucky draw were very attractive!).
Captain Norizan was the last to jump off Menara KL, and he carried the banner ‘World Pink World without Breast Cancer’ and after landing, handed it to Mr Loo and Mr Mohd Affandi Abdullah (Chief Operating Officer, Muzium Telekom, KL Tower Management). He also led the cheer “PINK BOLEH”, which resounded three times. Spirits were riding high indeed with hundreds echoing Captain Norizan.
Congratulations indeed to the Chairperson for this year’s ELC Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, Ms Katrina Liew and Vice Chairperson Joyce Teh. Together with their capable and highly charged team, they have planned yet another series of Pink October programmes – the Pink October Road Show in Gardens (Mid Valley) and Suria KLCC, to be followed by the Charity Gala Dinner in Mandarin Oriental on 24 Oct 2009.

Those who registered for the walk for RM30, got a pink round neck T shirt, with a goodie bag that they collected at the end of the walk. There was also a lucky draw for hampers right at the end, after the illumination of Menara KL. Those who patiently waited to see the landmark illumination event were rewarded by the spectacular lighting of Menara KL and four base jumpers in action.
NCR 2003 Report: Breast Cancer is still the top cancer amongst women
Latest statistics from the National Cancer Registry (NCR) show that lung cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in the country, whilst breast cancer is the top cancer in women. Lung cancer accounts for 13.8 per cent of cancer cases among men. For women, breast cancer accounts for 31 per cent of cases.
