The SHOW MUST GO ON and IT DID! OutRageously PiNk Nite, Bangsar Village II, Kuala Lumpur 7 Nov 2009
By Dr Evelyn Ho

It had been raining daily in the week running up to OutRageously PiNk Nite (OPN), so it was great to have a sunny day come Saturday 7 Nov 2009. Yet it was not to be, as close to 4.45pm, the heavy rain came with a bit of thunder and lightning, but the show went on, albeit delayed nearly one hour. The Harley Owners Group (Malaysia Chapter) could not gather in time/on time at their Head Office in Jalan 222 and dressing up the bikes was impossible. Yet, they took off just 15 min later than scheduled resplendent in their Mardi Gras-like decorated pink bras!!!

It was also deemed safe to abseil down the wall by Ms Chan Yuen Li of Nomad Adventure and Team2020 Eco Challenge, and Rene’e Aziz Ahmad, mountain climber and breast cancer survivor extraordinaire was raring to go go go!

So with all systems go, the KL Drumline Corps kicked off the OPN with their resounding and uplifting performance at 6pm at the Bangsar Village II Concourse. They then led the crowd to the area outside of Coffee Bean in Bangsar Village II. There the crowd looked up to the rooftop to see Rene’e Aziz Ahmad (guided by Chan Yuen Li and team) abseil down the wall, landing on the pavement in front of Coffee Bean. The crowd cheered and clapped. The KL Drumline Corps then led the crowd back to the concourse as the Harley Davidson Owner’s Group Malaysia Chapter (HOGs) with their Pink Challengers as pillion riders vroomed into the front of the concourse of Bangsar Village II.

As they parked their large bikes, the Mini Club motored in ferrying breast cancer survivors and models for the fashion show which was to ensue. Amongst the breast cancer survivors were also Jojo Struys, young and upcoming models and TV personality and presenter, Cheryl Samad. Chermaine Poo and Reuben Anson were the emcees for the event.

KL Drumline Corp presented their donation of RM2,000 to University Malaya Medical Centre Breast Cancer Fund. The cheque was received by Prof Dr Yip Cheng Har, Consultant Breast Surgeon from UMMC.

Juwita sang Unwritten and Sejak Hadir Mu, followed by Bhangra Jam (by Celebrity Fitness) where audience participation occurred. The “BooB-Bobbing” game resulted in some of the audience being volunteered to burst small balloons only with their mouth. Some got wet, because the balloons has to be picked up with their mouth from tubs of water. This naturally got the crowd in stitches. Swing KL then performed a swing demonstration.

Radiology Malaysia (the official homepage of College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia) then, presented prizes to winners of their 3-word Slogan and Digital Video contests which were part of the run up to OPN2009. The winning slogan was ”iCheck iAct iLive” by Mdm Loh Cheng Kee from Penang whilst Lai Shwu Fai and Dalila Musyirah Mohd Zin won the second and third prizes. They took home an LG 32in LCD TV, iPod Touch 8Gb and iPod Nano 8Gb respectively. iCheck iAct iLive was the theme for OPN.

The winners of the Digital Video Contest was the Breast Cancer Support Group, JB and they were exhilarated as well as perplexed as to how to carry the 42in LG Plasma TV back to Johor Bahru. The Pink Challengers won secong place and took home a Lenovo notebook computer. Mohd Afiq Deen bin Azizan, a fourth year architecture student, with his entry of Sebelah won the third prize of the iPod Touch 8Gb.

Nomad Adventure then conducted a session of Laughter Yoga which taught the crowd to laugh, and de-stress! Reuben Anson was back at the helm conducting the TOPLESS Contest…..whilst initially getting volunteers from the audience who were female…and giving them a little scare that they had to now remove their tops. They were relieved when they were sent off the stage and the real participants came forward to strike some poses or “do their walk” on the stage without their T-shirts on. Reuben of course got the crowd to chant for more, laugh or cheer the participants on. Private Structures sponsored the prizes for this “competition”.

Elvira Arul then, sang her heart out, wowing her audience at her powerful vocals. Celebrity Fitness then performed Jazzercise. The closing act was the poi performance by Sem-Poi Fire Crew and this took place on the pavement outside Coffee Bean and garnered a lot of interest even from the other floors of building nearby. People could be seen at their windows looking down at the poi performance.

Whilst all these items were carrying on, a Cha-Cha Clown was busily entertaining kids and adults alike and sculpting balloons. Capricorn Connections sponsored a face painter, whilst Kool Kutz Inc had a variety of fun activities – hair extensions, nail decorations and health was not to be forgotten. Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre and Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang, Sime Darby Medical Centre Megah had booths for enquiries and health promotional material.

An on-going opinion poll was also conducted by volunteers to get an idea of the public perception on a few areas in breast health/cancer. Goody Bags by Venusbuzz with sponsored Sunsilk shampoo and educational leaflets were available for a minimum donation of RM5, although they were also given out as tokens of appreciation. Xixili sponsored some goody bags for those spotted for having taken an effort to dress up in some pink outfits.
It was indeed a fitting end to a night to remember! Many are to be thanked for their contributions to enable the event, the performers, the “backstage” hands and innumberable volunteers, including the Girls Brigade 1st KL Company (GB) who helped with packing and then, conducting the survey. They had a very well set up booth to showcase what the GB was about.

OPN2009 was the culmination of the month long activities for STAND UP For PINK in Bangsar Village, which was launched on 3 Oct 2009. OPN was initially conceived in 2004, and the first OPN was a highly successful Street Party organised by the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council (MBCC) with the cooperation of the Bangsar Baru Business District. OPN2009 was made possible by venue host and sponsor – Bangsar Village in collaboration with VenusBuzz, Lariche Community, College of Radiology Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the MBCC.
