Reach To Recovery Training 2010, Petaling Jaya – 25-27 June 2010

Reach to Recovery Training is a training workshop for volunteer breast cancer survivors in Malaysia. This workshop was organized by the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA) from the 25-27 June 2010. It was held at the office of the BCWA in Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

The prerequisite was that all participants were volunteers who themselves have had breast cancer. There were 2 from Negeri Sembilan, 2 from Sabah, 6 from Sarawak, 2 from Perak, 1 from Seberang Jaya and the rest were from Klang Valley (16). Essentials of Reach to Recovery (RTR), socio-cultural issues and impact on gender and diseases, psychosocial and psychosexual impact, setting up RTR services, coping strategies, palliative care services, workshop on breast prostheses, information kit, facts on diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer as well as a workshop on self breast familiarization were held. The facilitators/lecturers included Ranjit Kaur, Ivy Josiah, Dr Patricia Gomez, Dr Evelyn Ho, Dato’ Dr Ibrahim Wahid, Tammy Tam and the Thimble Thumb Team.

Participants were very enthusiastic and gained much from the training workshop. Certificates were presented at the end of the third day and some participants also presented gifts to the organisers, spearheaded by the President of the BCWA, Ranjit Kaur.

NCR 2003 Report: Breast Cancer is still the top cancer amongst women

Latest statistics from
the National Cancer Registry (NCR) show
that lung cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in the country, whilst
breast cancer is the top cancer in women. Lung cancer accounts for 13.8 per cent of cancer cases among men. For women, breast cancer accounts
for 31 per cent of cases.
