Belinda Bateman’s Amazing Journey at The ATTIC, Kuala Lumpur – 27 Mar 2008 Belinda Bateman is a single mother with a 4 year old daughter. She was born with congenital arthogryposis multiplex and in December 2006, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was forced to sign a letter of resignation while she was still in the hospital when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Recently, she developed a recurrence of breast cancer. Yet, Belinda still manages to smile despite barely making ends meet, without a job and depending on her EPF and meagre Social Welfare aid.

Brisbane, Australia to host international breast cancer conference – 7 Feb 2008 The Cancer Council Queensland has announced a historic meeting in May next year, when more than 600 breast cancer survivors and experts from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and The Americas will converge on Brisbane for the 15th UICC Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference. The conference, hosted by The Cancer Council Queensland from May 13 – 15, 2009 will be the first worldwide forum for breast cancer consumers, support organisations and health professionals to meet and address common goals. The Conference will focus on three key areas: Survivorship, Capacity Building and Peer Support, with special tracks on, resources and funding, consumer/clinician collaboration, and issues faced by young women.
The Cancer Council Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer Professor Jeff Dunn said “Breast cancer is a global issue with around 1.2 million women diagnosed each year and more than four million women living with breast cancer worldwide. The Reach to Recovery International movement has, through peer support and advocacy, played a unique and important role in acknowledging and celebrating the power of shared personal experience.”

The Breast Cancer Support Society, Segamat Leads the Way Celebrating Life! – 15 Dec 2007 Almost all the survivors were barely recognizable and there were many “oohs” and “ahhs” mingled with lots of laughter at the Dinner & Dance, organised by the Breast Cancer Support Society, Segamat (BCSS). For most of the guests, the event was an eye-opener. They could not believe that all those beautiful ladies who looked so fit and trim were breast cancer survivors. BCSS believes it has achieved what it has set out to do that night … to make people see that there is life after breast cancer!

Teddy Bear’s Tea Party at The Attic, Kuala Lumpur – 7 Oct 2007 It was a “beary” happy tea party to introduce a marvellous story of life and living with cancer by Annie Smith, PhD, a Canadian who had breast and then ovarian cancer. Annie through her alter ego, a bear, writes of her experience of having to undergo a multitude of tests and treatments using illustrations of a bear. Her book is titled Bearing Up with Cancer.

Estée Lauder Companies’ Lights up Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Pink – 1 Oct 2007 On the night of 1st Oct 2007, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur became the first in Malaysia to be part of the Estée Lauder Companies’ Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative, a brainchild of Evelyn Lauder. AstraZeneca’s Preliminary Introduction to Touchpoint, Kuala Lumpur – 9 Aug 2007 Touchpoint is a patient support programme that helps the breast cancer patient become more motivated and better informed of the disease. It will consist of a practical guide booklet and a video of survivors’ experiences. Touchpoint hopes to reduce the confusion and overwhelming emotions of a newly diagnosed patient and is meant to be the patient’s companion throughout breast cancer treatment. Touchpoint was introduced at the 1st KL International Breast and Colorectal Cancer Congress at KL Convention Centre as well as at the Palliative Care and Support Conference at Crowne Mutiara Plaza Kuala Lumpur, held from 10-12 Aug 2007.

BCWA & Avon’s Saving Lives Through Early Detection Charity Hi-Tea, Kuala Lumpur – 28 June 2007 The BCWA and Avon Malaysia has forged a partnership to raise funds to conduct hands-on training workshops for women in local communities in Malaysia to enable them to practise early detection of breast cancer. Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course, Kuala Lumpur – 18-22 June 2007 Twenty-seven nurses from all over Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak congregated in the National Cancer Society of Malaysia’s Resource & Wellness Centre, Kuala Lumpur for an intensive 5-day course in June 2007. The course was sponsored by BP, organised by Amanita and National Cancer Society of Malaysia and supported by the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

Estée Lauder: Girls’ Breast Friend! – 27 April 2007 Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) Malaysia celebrated their 20th Anniversary at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur in a glitzy dinner affair. ELC proved to be girls’ best friend in more than one way, including contributing to the mammogram and breast health programmes of the College of Radiology. A cheque of RM 50,000 was presented to the CoR at the dinner.

Lily Yoong Wins Grand Prize in the Discover Radiology Malaysia Fun Online Quiz, Kuala Lumpur – 24 Mar 2007 Lily Yoong took part in the 2006 Online Quiz to test herself on her knowledge of breast cancer and arm herself with information to help others. Hers was the only all correct entry and clear winner of the contest. The Prize Presentation was held at Zuho Restaurant in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. Reach to Recovery Training – 16-18 Mar 2007 A training workshop for volunteer breast cancer survivors in Malaysia was held in the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) from 16th to 18th of March 2007. There were 18 participants, 2 of whom were from Indonesia. Topics covered were to prepare them for effective counselling, support, advocacy, training and teaching of breast health awareness.

The 2006 CoR Mammogram Programme Report – 5 Feb 2007 A total of 495 women benefited from the programme. In Johor, we were able to serve the smaller towns, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Kluang, in particular Segamat in addition to Johor Bahru. 93% of the participants were from Johor, while 4.8% were from Pahang and 2.2% from Terengganu.

Charity Fun Walk 2006, Kuala Lumpur – 26 Nov 2006 The Breast Cancer Welfare Association and their dragon boat racing team, the Pink Challengers held a successful charity fun walk at the Taman Lembah Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur. The Dragon Boat Racing Team of the BCWA were raising funds for their activities to bring awareness to all that even breast cancer survivors could participate in sporting events such as dragon boat racing! Men Care! Male Support of Breast Cancer Screening in Women Project 1st Training Workshop was held from 16-19 Nov 2006. The primary aim is to address the lack of education and knowledge in men regarding breast cancer. A comprehensive training manual has been developed for service providers of women and health care organisations.
This National Council of Women's Organisations (NCWO) project is supported with a grant from The Asia Foundation and Pfizer Malaysia.

Pantai Medical Centre Launches Wear It Pink 2 – Breast Cancer Education & Awareness Campaign 2006 – 8 Aug 2006 In a colourful and at moments, poignant, ceremony graced by YB Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Pantai Medical Centre (PMC), Bangsar and Asia Assistance launched its Wear It Pink 2 campaign at PMC. The ceremony included the rendition of the Ribbon of Life by Adibah Noor; testimonies by breast cancer survivors and a multimedia presentation.
The beneficiary of the funds raised in the campaign will go towards the breast cancer awareness programmes of the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. Several events have been organised, including a public forum on menopause and breast cancer, a fun walk in Bangsar, charity gala dinner and mammograms at discounted rate.

Livial, the Breast & Sexual Well-Being in Menopausal Patients, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel – 28 July 2006 Prof Dr Kim Won-whe brought laughter and woke everyone up with his enlightening and light hearted account of Women’s Sexual Well-being After Menopause in an afternoon series of lectures and workshops organised by Organon.

Standard of Care in Breast Cancer Workshop for Doctors Ultimately Benefit the Public – 22 July 2006 Medical doctors primarily from the surgical and oncology units in the Klang Valley attended a 1-day workshop on Standard of Care in Breast Cancer. The topics covered showed the multidisciplinary (team) approach to good breast health/cancer care.

Inaugural Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course Raises Level of Breast Care in Malaysia – 24-28 Apr 2006 Twenty five participants completed a week long specialist breast cancer nurse education course at Johnson and Johnson Medical. The course, jointly organised by Amanita, the College of Radiology, and the National Cancer Society of Malaysia was the first of its kind in Malaysia.
