Clinical Cardiac Computed Tomography Workshop, Kota Samarahan, Sarawak - 11-12 May 2013
The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan was the venue for a clinical cardiac computed tomography (CT) workshop over the 11-12th May 2013 weekend. Participants were from Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia and comprised radiologists, cardiologists and radiographers/radiologic technicians. Dr Cham Yee Ling was the coordinator of the workshop organized by the Cardiology Department of the SGH Heart Centre.

The AOSR Council Meets in Yokohama at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Japan Radiological Society, Japan -11-14th April 2013
 “Creation, Innovation and Globalization” was the theme of the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Japan Radiological Society (JRS), held at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan from the 11th to 14th April 2013. There were sessions in English and even presentations in Japanese had English slides so that all could participate in the proceedings. A CT colonography training course was also held. The JRS also hosted the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology Council, Finance and Constitution Committee meetings.

The 4th Asian Congress of Abdominal Radiology, Kaohsiung, Taiwan – 22-24 Mar 2013
“Personalised Medicine in Abdominal Radiology” was the theme of the 4th Asian Congress of Abdominal Radiology (ACAR 2013) held in the Kaohsiung Medical University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. There were plenary lectures, special focus sessions, refresher courses, scientific sessions, image interpretation sessions as well as the scientific exhibition and luncheon symposia. The scientific programme was indeed excellent as were the social programmes. The Chinese Taipei Society of Radiology Banquet on 23 March 2013 was indeed a spectacular event with a flamboyant backdrop of lights. Delegates were entertained with special performances from classical string music to modern dance.

16th Congress of the ASEAN Association of Radiology (AAR), Bangkok, Thailand – 21-23 Mar 2013
The 16th Congress of the ASEAN Association of Radiology Incorporating the 50th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Royal College of Radiologists of Thailand and the Radiological Society of Thailand has just concluded and I would say it was a resounding success. A total of 1200 participants registered with local participants making up the most at 850. 26 participants were from Malaysia. The Congress was hosted by the Royal College of Radiologists of Thailand (RCRT) and the Radiological Society of Thailand (RST), and held from 21st-23rd March 2013 at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at Central World, Bangkok, Thailand.

How to Interpret MR Images of Rectal Cancer: Coloproctology 2013 Post Congress MRI Workshop, Kuala Lumpur – 17 March 2013
The Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons recently organised Coloproctology 2013 from 14-16 March 2013 at Shangri La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The College of Radiology participated in support of the Post Congress MRI Workshop, conducted by Prof Regina Beets-Tan, Professor of Oncologic Imaging at the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands. A total of 60 radiologists and surgeons attended the workshop held on a Sunday morning. The interactive online learning session was followed by a Q & A session. The feedback was very positive with both radiologists and surgeons fostering a better understanding of each other’s roles in the team approach to patient care.

In Memory of Dr Albert Lim & Dato’ Dr K. Kulaveerasingam – 11 Mar 2013
The College of Radiology (CoR) is sad to announce the recent passing of Dr Albert Kok-Hooi Lim (3 June 1952 - 8 March 2013) and Dato’ Dr K. Kulaveerasingam (28 June 1930 - 10 March 2013).

Dato’ Dr K. Kulaveerasingam was one of our professional body’s founding father and a Past President as well a Past President of the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology.

Dr Albert Lim was once Head and Senior Consultant of the Institute of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur and a Vice President of our College of Radiology (then, known as Malaysian Radiological Society).

The CoR extends their deepest condolences to the families of both Dr Albert Lim and Dato’ Dr Kulaveerasingham.

Donald Resnick Wows All In The “Internal Derangements of Joints – Advanced and Intensive MR Imaging Course”, Kuala Lumpur – 8-11 Nov 2012
Donald L. Resnick, often referred to as the “father of present-day musculoskeletal radiology” was the programme director and main speaker for the recently concluded 2nd Annual Asian MRI Course on Internal Derangement of Joints: Advanced and Intensive MR Imaging Course. The hall was packed with some 240 participants of which, about 70% were from Malaysia.

Let’s Celebrate International Day of Radiology (IDoR) – 8 Nov 2012
The European Society of Radiology (ESR), the American College of Radiology (ACR), and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) celebrate the first annual International Day of Radiology along with other radiological societies from the world over. The College of Radiology in Malaysia also supports this initiative to increase awareness of the value of radiology in safe patient care, and improving the understanding of the vital role of radiologists in the healthcare continuum.

The initial International Day of Radiology will be held on November 8, the day Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen discovered X-rays in 1895. Oncologic imaging has been chosen as the main theme of the day, to reflect how important radiology is in ALL stages of cancer management from early detection to prevention to treatment monitoring.

2012 Breast Seminar, Kota Bharu, Kelantan – 28-30 Sep 2012
The College of Radiology extended its continuous education on Breast Seminar to the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia in 2012. The seminar was held at the Grand Riverview Hotel in Kota Bharu. A total of 200 participants attended this seminar. The scientific programme included Malpractice Issues, Client Charter and Risk Management in Mammography as well as Tomosynthesis. The hands-on radiographers’ workshops were held in two local hospitals.

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Creates Worldwide Awareness for Hospis Malaysia’s Palliative Care Mission, Kuala Lumpur – 13 Sep 2012
Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge created an important milestone for Hospis Malaysia when they visited the institution in conjunction with their Official Visit to Malaysia. Their Royal Highnesses witnessed the launch of the National Paediatric Palliative Care Initiative by the Honourable Minister of Health, Dato’ Seri Liow Tiong Lai. The visit also marked the forging of relations between Hospis Malaysia and the East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), for which the Duchess of Cambridge is the Royal Patron. The Duchess of Cambridge also gave her first overseas speech during the visit!

Safe and Sound: Radiology in the 21st Century – The 14th Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology, Sydney, Australia – 30 Aug-2 Sep 2012
It has been 40 odd years since the Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology (AOCR) was organised and held in Australia. The first AOCR was held in Melbourne in 1971! The 14th Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology combined with The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) 63rd Annual Scientific Meeting was held in the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Australia from 30 August to 2 September 2012. The Welcome and Opening Ceremony was graced by The Honourable Tanya Plibersek MP, Australian Federal Minister for Health. During the Gala Dinner, retiring AOSR President Prof Byung Ihn Choi handed over the President’s Chain to Prof Kazuro Sugimura, the new AOSR President for 2012-2014.

IAEA Calls for Enhanced Radiation Protection of Patients


Advances in medical imaging techniques are allowing doctors to detect hidden diseases and make ever more accurate diagnoses. But radiation safety experts at the IAEA say that overuse of high-tech scanning procedures may unnecessarily expose patients to increased radiation levels.
