Articles in our Breast Health Info Centre are kept simple and tailored to the frequent queries we receive. The College of Radiology aims to provide reliable information about breast cancer and its early detection to Malaysians so that they may be empowered to take charge of their own breast health. To read the various topics covered in this section of the Breast Health Info Centre, please click on the topics in the menu to the left of this page. As more information and research results emerge, it is easy to get confused and it is only human that we tend to hold fast onto some bits of information that suits what we want to hear. As always, we should weigh new information against time tested recommendations. Whenever in doubt, please consult your doctor. Please contact us if you have questions that are not addressed in our articles here and we will attempt to put that right for you! Insight to Breast Cancer Although, breast cancer is far more common in women than in men (1% incidence), men can also suffer from breast cancer. Males with breast cancer may delay seeking treatment, thinking that their breast symptoms are not important and through ignorance that breast cancer does not exist in men. On the other hand, women’s fear of breast cancer is such that they do not see their doctor immediately when they discover a lump, because fear overcomes them. Unfortunately, fear does not help the “lump” or any other abnormality go away, and women lose precious time should the lump turn out to be cancer. Be Breast AWARE! Everyone needs to know that early detection saves lives! Despite lack of specific prevention measures, we can help ourselves by detecting breast cancer early as this offers the best chance of survival and a normal lifestyle. Remember, the patient (this could be you, your friend, relative, colleague, neighbour) is an important, if not the most important member of the TEAM approach to battle breast cancer. The other team members include the general practitioner or breast clinic doctor, surgeon, plastic surgeon, radiologist, pathologist, clinical oncologist, nurse, counsellors, support groups and rehabilitation therapist. I would like to thank Professor Dr Yip Cheng Har of the Breast Clinic in University Malaya Medical Centre for her contributions on the treatment of breast cancer as well as her experience and views on local (Malaysian) breast cancer facts. Use the Breast Health Info Centre in Radiology Malaysia! Please share this information with your family and friends too. Who knows, it may help to save their lives! We welcome feedback and comments so that we may improve our service to you. Happy reading! Dr Evelyn Ho Web Editor |
